Mechanics that can make your game more Reddit-y

  • User Generated Content (posts and comments)
    • Games that facilitate creating interesting, easily moderated UGC (i.e. posts and comments) are poised to do well on Reddit given its ecosystem of contributors and moderators. Content that inspires conversation is more likely to appeal to redditors.
  • Crowdsourcing
    • Competing or coordinating to create pictures, feedback, solutions, level creation etc. r/place is a good historical example where communities, and subreddits, coordinated to impact the game.
  • N v N matchmaking
    • Grouping games by interest, team, or faction can jumpstart community within your game. Again, r/place is a good example here where groups self-organized to draw things (see the Brasil drawing from r/Brasil). Other examples include r/kickopenthedoor which randomly assigns you to a team to start, after which you can graduate to more specific teams.
  • Leaderboards & status
    • Reddit itself is a leaderboard to our contributors and many users care deeply about trophies and flair. For power users, getting reddit karma (awarded by getting up/down votes) unlocks your ability to contribute in many communities. Earning this local status is a powerful motivator. r/changemyview is another example of a Reddit-y leaderboard.
  • Turn it into a quiz
    • If you are looking at a 1v1 game, think about turning it into a quiz; users propose a starting position, and players have to solve it. Bring users together around a common and discrete challenge.
  • Strong first impression
    • A lot of posts on Reddit are viewed from the home feed. This means apps that have a compelling first screen and an easy path for redditors to dive in perform better. See r/pixelary as an example with each post looking unique and “guessing” is low friction for new players.

Sustaining Success

We hope to see participants continue to grow their project after the event. Successful apps built during the hackathon can become eligible for Reddit Developer Funds, which rewards apps for reaching viewership milestones, or apps that are responsible for the creation of a new established community.

Eligible developers can request access to our Payments sandbox APIs during or after the event to build premium layers or goods into their apps. You can request access to the payments sandbox API here. To qualify for Developer Funds of Payments API access, developers need to meet our Earn eligibility requirements.
